Sue Hertweck's story PDF  | Print |  E-mail
My ileostomy surgery was done as an emergency in 1960 as a result of acute fulminating ulcerative colitis. So, I had no prior time to worry about what it would be like to wear a pouch on my abdomen. But when I was well enough they explained what it was and why they had decided to do the surgery.

At the end of World War II, after four years of service in the Army Air Force as a combat radar operator, and after receiving my engineering degree, I moved to Southern California, expecting to settle down into a relatively normal life as an electro-mechanical engineer. But that's not what happened.

Michele Theriot's story PDF  | Print |  E-mail
I am Michele Theriot, I have a colostomy and a urostomy for the past 5 years. Around 2000 and 2001, I was suffering from heavy menstrual flow and fatigue. I didn't seek help right away. I think what finally drove me to the doctor was I was so exhausted and nauseated all the time, and had lost a lot of weight and couldn't keep food down. I guess I had fallen out of yearly check-up and maybe I was a bit scared and didn't want to know.

Little did I know that almost two months later, after a stay at two different hospitals, I would have an ileostomy for what was called "indeterminate" disease? That is a name given when doctors cannot decide if the patient has ulcerative colitis or Crohn's disease.

Clarence Hall's story PDF  | Print |  E-mail
I'm not sure that experiences with ostomies makes good news for our letter. Mine began when I noticed some blood in my bowel movements in 1996. I went to my doctor and he sent me for a colonoscopy.

Barbara Baker's Story PDF  | Print |  E-mail
My ostomy story begins on April 30, 1969. I guess you could say it began while I was developing in my mother's womb, but I like to start on the day I was born. After three boys, each a year apart, my parents were hoping for a girl. I answered their prayers and my grandma Evelyn won a $5 bet with my grandfather. I came into this world with an even bigger surprise. My bladder was on the outside of my body. It's called bladder exstrophy and is very rare, especially in girls.
